about Me

Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Maria Laura moved to Indiana, the United States, in 1986, to study music, graduating with the Master of Music and Master of Arts from Ball State University.  Then she moved to Miami where she earned the Doctorate in Piano Performance from University of Miami.  Being an accomplished pianist has led her to perform in the United States, Europe, and South America together with Ricardo Roel, her husband and piano duo partner.  Together they have performed extensively making appearances with orchestras performing their own arrangements of tangos and Argentine music.

Her love for art however harks back to her childhood.  She got inspired by her father who she usually saw him painting his oil landscapes.  Maria Laura always enjoyed drawing, crafts, collages, and painting.  A self-taught artist, now her life is between music and painting, the two arts she mostly enjoys and likes.  Nature, colorful abstracts, folk objects, and tango influences are the themes she likes to paint inspired mostly by folk Argentinean art, its earthy colors and texture.  She also enjoys painting trees, landscapes, serene and endless horizons with changing skies, watery scenes, layers of paint that suggests the ocean, and vivid, colorful abstracts.  She is very much influenced not only in music by the tango but also on the canvas where she evokes the little streets of her beloved Buenos Aires and its tango dancers.
